In-house Review of Excavation Procedures
We would be very happy to review your business Excavation Procedure and advise on the best way to improve in every angle.

Training – doing things in right order
The training scheme that we propose is designed to provide full exposure to every element of being a competent Permit to Dig easier / controller / approver.
In our view and as described before – you should not be involved in utilities unless you know AutoCAD well. We would provide a training in use of AutoCAD not only in terms of utilities but also in broad application. Lets call it a crush course in CAD. Two to three hours of trading are sufficient for anybody with decent computer skills to be competent with CAD after we have delivered our training.
And the use of GPR is a must – we would provide completely different approach in how to deploy this tool efficiently in the field in areas where it’s needed and where you would be wasting your time.

Incident Investigations are almost always like watching an old movie from 70’s or 80’s.
Been there, done it, got a T-shirt.
Time and time again we analyse identical scenarios and we pretend this kind of an incident has never occurred before. And almost always we try to blame an individual as oppose to the organisation.
The key to understanding why we have incidents is – we fail those individuals with all kind of shortcomings. And the main thing is we have no bullet proof systems to prevent it. Documenting what we do and how we do it is the key. And there is almost certainly a problem with documentation process in your organisation manuals.
Competency assessments for Staff
Like with any piece of plant where we asses every individual and document it before allowing free range on site we not only should but we need to enshrine this requirement in our procedures.
The last thing we want is to have someone with no prior experience – just certified – to trace electrical cables and gas pipes. We need to do more – and one of the key is to satisfy ourselves that those who undertake these probably most risky tasks in thousands each day are undertaken by competent and dedicated individuals.

Additionally we would be happy to follow you system which you may have already in place or we would work with you to develop your own process in line of your business.
Design Stage Engagement / Consultation
This is where everything goes right or wrong. Sadly – most of the time wrong.
Just by going to these simple facts – designers ask for GPR surveys – it shows how little they know about locating services. Then we have procurement – where the cheapest quote wins and then we get apples, oranges and plums all mixed up in one single basket.
And nobody seems to know how to move forward or how to fix problems. We have drawings with lines with thousands of various strings and nobody can say how accurate the information on those plans actually is.
We design things pretending nothing exists in the ground or that where the desktop studies show lines that’s where they must be.
And that is how we end up having sky rocketing construction costs often between 2-10% and often as a result of poor investigation into underground assets.
So our advise is – spend a tiny bit more and save yourself a big money!

How to do things in the Field – Penny Wise Pound Foolish
Most things most of the time go wrong when we have no standard in place and no expert in place to define how things should be done properly.
These are two fundamental problems and this should not be mentioned but the third problem is – we do not think it’s important to know what is in the ground and therefore we do not want to pay for a proper investigation.
So – what almost always occurs – we use wrong equipment to complete the task, we choose the lowest quote without understanding what the quotes include and we allow the utility survey companies to tell you what you need.
More importantly – our message and proposal may look expensive to you and many other individuals but only when you have slowly analysed and prices what we propose you will begin to see huge amounts of saving.
